CATIE Graduate and Former Director General Appointed as Head of IICA
The Tropics Foundation proudly joins CATIE in celebrating the appointment of Dr. Muhammad Ibrahim as the new Director General of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), an institution recognized as a strategic partner and sister organization to CATIE.
His election took place on November 4, 2025, during the XXIII Regular Meeting of the Inter-American Board of Agriculture (IABA) held in Brasília, Brazil. This appointment represents a significant milestone in Dr. Ibrahim’s distinguished career and a moment of great pride for the CATIE community, which honors the achievement of one of its own graduates reaching one of the most influential positions in tropical agriculture across the Americas.
Following the announcement, Dr. Ibrahim received numerous congratulatory messages from colleagues and partners, including Dr. Rubén Guevara, CATIE’s Director Emeritus and Dr. Luis Pocasangre, current Director General of CATIE.

The position of Director General of IICA is widely recognized as one of the most influential roles in agricultural and rural development across the hemisphere, placing Dr. Ibrahim at the forefront of regional efforts in sustainability, innovation and food security. IICA also serves as the specialized technical agency for agriculture within the Organization of American States (OAS).
